Episode 8 - Final Cut Server - Part 2, Installation

Posted on February 19, 2009

Part 2 in our series on Final Cut Server. Weʼve spent some time studying the program, the integration and the workflow.  In this series weʼll look at FCS from several angles to help you make critical decisions in starting down this path.

This time, we talk about the array of installation options.  From preparing yourself for integration and install, to dollars and sense, we talk about big XSan installations and small one seat solutions.  With the help of Jon Rutherford (Final Cut Server forum monitor and FCS supertech from Detroit-based MacProfessionals) we separate fact from fiction and help you lay the groundwork for a successful FCS workflow.

So far the talk has been about the two systems that use final cut server. But this is the tip of the iceburg. What seems to be implied is that you can go the route of Xsan or Terrablock or you can skip the SAN solution and go to NAS. What I’ve been learning is that this is simply not true. A couple of systems that have been suggested to me are Studio Network Solutions EVO witch is a fiber/1Gig solution that starts at about 20K and another solution using an array an ATTO fiber solution with an Xserve. for about 28K for a 16TB SAN. I’m beginning to see many more possibilities. What about just taking a Macpro and loading a couple of fiber HBA’s and useing that as a server? It has gigabit ethernet and fiber and you could load the Final cut server on it and use an array like a caldigit or other array that has a serious throughput wouldn’t that work just as well? You could use Fiberjet or Metasan or SANmp to control the array. Would that not be a viable solution. What about Cat DV? Someone suggested using something like an EVO and using a machine like a MiniMac as a server to run either finalcut server or Cat DV via Gigabit ethernet. C’mon give us the real dirt for FCS The way it sounds in the podcast you either use Xsan with 3 Xserves or your outa luck. I’ve been told you can use an xserve with FCS and an array with a FC solution from Atto and a ethernet card and your good to go. I’m looking for the strait poop none of this spend 100K and you can make this work how about solutions we can all use and make work. Well at least those of use with some technical experience and a little ingenuity.
